SKC’s REACH Theatre in rehearsal at ARIEL Theatrical in Salinas |
Eight very special young individuals are “breaking a leg” for their very first time this fall in the pilot of a new community program being developed by Special Kids Crusade, in collaboration with ARIEL Theatrical in Salinas. REACH Theatre, so named for SKC’s commitment to helping special kids “REACH” for the stars, is giving these young actors an opportunity to work alongside veteran teen actors to get a feel for all aspects of musical theatre – from singing, acting and movement to lighting, costuming and set design. Most importantly, REACH is bringing a community together, helping all participants better understand each other’s strengths and challenges-and it’s all being accomplished in the pursuit of one common interest – a love for musical theatre.

I have mixed feelings as I write this month. Ilene Allinger Candreva, a foundational Special Kids Crusade employee, has submitted her resignation after accepting a position withTucci Learning Solutions. My mixed feelings grow from sadness because Ilene is leaving SKC and excitement for her as she begins something new in her life. Saying that Ilene is a “foundational SKC employee” is accurate, but in- adequate. She is a mother with a unique understanding of how children develop. She is a social worker with insight into our society. Ilene is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with expertise in human behavior. She is a teacher and one of the authors of the Including Special Kids program. Ilene has done everything at SKC from payroll to staff training. She has been a representative of SKC in the community…. always the advocate for developmentally disabled children. As well, Ilene is the only person I know that likes sweet things as much as I do. As Ilene moves into her new position, meeting co-workers and learning systems, SKC has filled gaps left by her resignation. That SKC remains strong and vibrant, is a testament to the great work done by Ilene. She will carry her experience, imagination, expertise and education with her to Tucci Learning Solutions. Hopefully, she will be working with SKC, on specific projects, in the future. In the meantime, thank you Ilene for making it possible for SKC to help special kids reach for the stars.
